The Beauty of Silence (2027-2029)

This upcoming exhibition serves as the first major international retrospective dedicated to Toshihiro Hamano, offering a comprehensive look at over sixty years of his artistic evolution. Curated by Lynda Frenois, the exhibition will tour Tokyo, Kyoto, Paris, Nice, and Washington, DC, transforming each venue into a contemplative space that highlights Hamano’s unique ability to merge Zen philosophy, wabi-sabi aesthetics, and contemporary spiritual inquiry. By bringing together nearly one hundred diverse works—ranging from monumental folding screens and ink paintings to sculptures and archival materials—the retrospective invites viewers into a poetic dialogue between light, void, and matter.

Central to this experience is the exceptional presentation of The Illustrated Life of Prince Shōtoku Across Four Seasons, a monumental cycle commissioned for the Chūgū-ji Temple, alongside other iconic compositions such as the Katsura Imperial Villa series and Flying. To deepen the viewer's engagement, each location will feature a dedicated cultural program, including workshops and mediation tools focused on the Japanese concept of ma (the interval). The exhibition will also be accompanied by a comprehensive, trilingual catalogue (Japanese, French, and English) featuring previously unpublished iconography and scholarly essays that document the artist's international resonance and technical mastery.
