Toshihiro Hamano
Born in 1937 in Takamatsu, Japan, Toshihiro Hamano has spent over six decades forging a unique artistic language that bridges the meditative depth of ancient Zen traditions with a modern, global sensibility. Trained at Tokyo’s prestigious Tama Art University, he developed a profound mastery of nihonga and ink-wash painting, eventually emerging as a pivotal voice in the contemporary scene following his breakout participation in the 1970 Osaka World Expo.
His practice is a contemplative exploration of the elemental, spanning everything from delicate washi paper paintings and bronze sculptures to monumental, immersive installations. At the core of his work lies an ascetic dedication to the Japanese concepts of ma—the powerful interval between forms—and wabi-sabi, which finds transcendent beauty in the incomplete and the impermanent. This philosophical rigor is perhaps best embodied by his magnum opus, The Illustrated Life of Prince Shōtoku Across Four Seasons, a fifteen-year commission for the Chūgū-ji Temple in Nara that reinterprets centuries of religious iconography through a contemporary lens.
Today, Hamano’s works are held in prestigious public and private collections across Japan, Europe, and the United States. Now in his eighties and still based in the Kagawa region, he continues to create with an unwavering commitment to the spirit of the gesture, currently preparing for The Beauty of Silence, his first comprehensive international retrospective.

Founded the RYU Contemporary Art Group to foster artistic exchange between Japan and the West.
1981
Founded the International Art Exchange Institute 21, where he pursued comparative research on Eastern and Western aesthetics with renowned artists from various countries, including Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
